Toledoan sentenced for assault on police officer
8/10/2011A Toledo man who claimed he didn't remember assaulting an Oregon police officer because he was intoxicated was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Tuesday to four years of community control.
John Belew, 50, of 1057 Sisson Ave. also must spend six months in the Correctional Treatment Facility for his role in an April 10 incident in Oregon in which his son is accused of shooting at police, according to Judge Dean Mandros' ruling.
Belew pleaded guilty June 28 to assault on a police officer, admitting that he threatened officers and grabbed one officer by the neck, after his son had been shot during the incident.
Oregon police were called that day to Piccadilly East Apartments, 2750 Pickle Rd., where they say they encountered Belew's son, Jeffery, who shot at the patrol vehicle at least four times, striking it twice. A second officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the torso.
Jeffery Belew, 24, is charged with two counts each of felonious assault and attempt to commit aggravated murder. He is scheduled for trial Sept. 12.
