FREMONT -- A Fremont man who allegedly carried a jewelry case out of the local Kmart in a shopping cart appeared in Fremont Municipal Court Friday.

Jose A. Mata, 37, was released on electronic home monitoring. He was arrested Thursday and charged with felony theft in connection with the loss of jewelry estimated at $26,000.

Fremont police said a thief entered the store the morning of Sept. 17, cut the security wire at the jewelry counter, loaded a case that sits on the counter into a shopping cart, and left. Police said they recovered some of the jewelry at Mr. Mata’s mother-in-law’s house and on his person.
