A Detroit man is to be arraigned Saturday in Toledo Municipal Court on one count of robbery after police say he stole a $28,000 diamond ring from a Westfield Franklin Park mall jewelry store Thursday evening.

Devon Edwards, 28, was to face a judge Friday but was reported to be ill, according to court records.

Police say that a man went into Diamonds Forever just after 6 p.m. Thursday and asked to see a gold 2.02-carat canary-yellow diamond ring.

Per store policy, the man gave the store owner, Shahid Latif, an identification card, but it had the name "Darnell Sutton" and the photo did not look like the man asking to see the ring, the police report states.

The man grabbed the ring and ran, but he was chased by three witnesses who caught up with him in the mall's parking lot, police said.

An off-duty officer, Robert D'Agostino, saw the commotion and placed Mr. Edwards in custody. The ring was recovered.
