A Toledo woman who in October was named a suspect in the shooting death of her husband will not face charges in his death, a Lucas County grand jury has decided.
The grand jury declined Friday to indict April Jones, 50, for murder or voluntary manslaughter. Her husband, Howard Williams, 40, was killed Oct. 24 by a single gunshot wound to the chest.
John Weglian, chief of the special units division of the prosecutor's office, noted the incident began as a domestic confrontation at 1825 Ottawa Dr. in central Toledo.
He said that the investigation showed Ms. Jones made attempts to get away from Williams, even calling 911.
"The case was investigated and all information from the investigation was presented to the grand jury, and the grand jury elected to no bill the case," he said.
Authorities said Ms. Jones had been the victim of domestic violence in the past.
According to the investigation, Williams entered the home where she was staying and took her computer.
Believing that he also was there to take a gun, Ms. Jones retrieved the weapon and attempted to leave the house.
While trying to leave she asked emergency dispatchers for help. Police were on their way when Williams assaulted Ms. Jones after she left the home and the gun went off during a tussle, authorities said.
Williams was pronounced dead at 1:24 a.m. Ms. Jones was injured in the incident.
