A day after being convicted of three counts of rape for the assault of a 12-year-old girl, Frederick Coffey was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Friday to life in prison.

Coffey, 56, of 921 Homer Ave. was found guilty Thursday by a jury after a four-day trial.

The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for about one hour before returning the guilty verdicts.

Judge Linda Jennings ordered Friday that he serve the mandatory term of life in prison with parole eligibility after 10 years on each count. Noting the "reprehensible" nature of the crime, the judge ordered that the terms be served consecutively.

Coffey was arrested soon after the Feb. 4, 2011, incident.

He was classified as a sexual offender and was told that if he were released from prison, he would be required to report to the county sheriff for the rest of his life.
