2 teen boys sentenced over handgun in school

Two teenage boys -- one who took a loaded gun to school and another who disposed of it -- were sentenced in Lucas County Juvenile Court Thursday after being found delinquent in connection with illegal conveyance of a weapon in a school.

Judge Connie Zemmelman sentenced the 14-year-old who brought the handgun to school to an unspecified amount of time in the Youth Treatment Center followed by time on probation. She warned that if he failed to adhere to terms of his probation, he would spend time in the Ohio Department of Youth Services.

Also sentenced was a 14-year-old boy who threw the gun in a bathroom garbage can so it would not be found. He was sentenced to probation, including some time in custody detention.

The two boys, who were students at Toledo Public Schools' Keyser Elementary on Hill Avenue, were arrested April 19. The gun was discovered during a search after another student relayed to a teacher that a classmate had a loaded gun.

Authorities said the teenager who brought the gun to school admitted he bought it. The weapon was ordered destroyed.
