A Toledoan who police say paralyzed a man by shooting him is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing next week.

Breon Barnett, 20, of 527 Everett St. is charged with one count each of felonious assault and robbery.

During an appearance Thursday in Toledo Municipal Court, he was ordered held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $400,000 bond pending a hearing on Thursday.

Police allege the suspect robbed and shot Kenneth Downer, 29, in a back yard in the 500 block of Dexter Street on June 24.

Mr. Downer was shot in the back, police said. Witnesses initially reported to police that they heard Mr. Downer arguing with two men before hearing several gunshots. The two men were seen running and then fleeing in a blue car.
