BOWLING GREEN — A Toledo man who stole $15,472 from a bowling league prize fund was sentenced to 60 days in the Wood County jail’s work-release program and ordered to pay restitution plus a $1,000 fine.

Duane McGorty, 47, of 1435 Beecham St. pleaded guilty Tuesday to a reduced charge of theft, a first-degree misdemeanor. He had been charged in May with fifth-degree felony theft.

Court records show Mr. McGorty, the Ken Scheffert Memorial Trio league’s treasurer, left a letter for Rossford Lanes’ manager explaining that the money was gone because he was “in a vicious payday loan cycle. …”

Wood County Common Pleas Judge Robert Pollex suspended 60 days of a 120-day jail term and placed Mr. McGorty on informal probation for a year. Mr. McGorty paid full restitution Tuesday.
