A Maumee cardiologist will be arraigned Dec. 12 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on multiple counts of illegal drug possession and trafficking.

Barry P. DeRan, a specialist in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine, was charged with 15 counts each of aggravated possession of drugs and aggravated trafficking in drugs. The charges are second-degree felonies punishable by up to eight years in prison.

The case was investigated by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy, which, with the help of law enforcement, searched the doctor’s home and office in March. Authorities said he is accused of improperly prescribing pain medication to people he knows or those referred to him.
