Couple in child assault to stand trial in April

An East Toledo couple who authorities say were caught on video assaulting their adoptive child will go to trial in Lucas County Common Pleas Court in April.

Joshua and Courtney Waxler, both 24, of 2355 Seaman St. are each charged with two alternate counts of endangering children. Each faces up to eight years in prison if convicted. Judge Myron Duhart scheduled an April 8 trial date during the couple's court appearance Monday.

Police allege Mr. Waxler assaulted the 3-year-old child with an athletic shoe and Mrs. Waxler choked her and threw her to the ground during a February incident.

The assault reportedly was recorded on a cell phone by a relative. The girl and a 5-year-old girl had been in the Waxlers' care for about three years.
