Top court refuses to hear ex-deputy sheriff’s appeal`
1/24/2013The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear the appeal of ex-Lucas County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Gray, who was convicted of helping cover up the death of an inmate at the county jail.
Gray was sentenced in 2011 to three years in prison after being convicted of one count of violating civil rights for leaving inmate Carlton Benton in a cell in 2004 without seeking medical attention and two counts of writing false reports of the incident. Gray was acquitted of lying to the FBI and of applying a sleeper hold that rendered the shackled inmate unconscious.
A federal jury acquitted Lucas County Sheriff James Telb and internal affairs Capt. Robert McBroom of charges that they conspired to cover up the death and misled federal officials.
