McClure man’s sentence redefined, still 39 years

BOWLING GREEN — A McClure, Ohio, man who was driving drunk when he caused a crash that killed a Weston couple was resentenced Thursday to 39 years in prison.

Cory Mendoza, now 24, was again before Wood County Common Pleas Alan Mayberry after the 6th District Court of Appeals ruled in December that Mendoza should not have been sentenced for drunken driving when he was sentenced for multiple counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.

Thursday’s sentence was the same as Judge Mayberry imposed in 2010 but excluded the 10 days added for the drunken driving charge. A jury found Mendoza guilty on a long list of charges related to the Oct. 5, 2008, deaths of William and Sharon DeWitt, both 69, and injuries to the DeWitts’ daughter, Shelen Stevens, and a passenger in Mendoza’s car, Alivia Baron.
