Man admits to role in fatal robbery try
3/13/2013Though he did not pull off the robbery or pull the trigger, one of five men charged in the Nov. 19 shooting death and robbery of a South Toledo gym owner admitted to his role in the crime Tuesday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.
It was also revealed in court Tuesday by the defense and the prosecution that the victim had not been the intended target.
Matthew Managhan, 34, of 3417 Anderson Pkwy. pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the commission of felonious assault with a gun specification and aggravated robbery in the death of Joseph Lengel, Jr., 57, owner of CrossFit Intensity Gym. He faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced April 30 by Judge James Bates.
Managhan admitted to his attorney, Sam Kaplan, that he arranged for three co-defendants to rob a person thought to have cash and possibly drugs when he arrived for work at an auto repair shop on Warehouse Road next to Intensity CrossFit Gym. Taken was an iPad.
Louis Kountouris, an assistant Lucas County prosecutor, said later that investigators do not think Mr. Lengel was the intended victim.
Co-defendants are Devonte Harris, 19, of 1326 Gordon St., Jason Kuhns, 31, of 1416 Beecham St., and Chad D. Brown, 35, of 839 Walbridge Ave. Deitrekk Boone, 19, of the Beecham address, is at large.
