Jail term ends early for ex-group home owner

5/10/2013

The former owner of a group home in South Toledo where two patients died in 2008 from heat stroke has been released from jail early.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gene Zmuda granted a motion Wednesday to suspend the balance of the jail sentence of Pamela Shay, 62, who has been held at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio since Jan. 4.

She was found guilty of neglecting two patients who died during a heat wave in the summer of 2008 at the Angel Arms group home she owned and operated at 1577 Bow St.

In 2011, Ms. Shay was sentenced to two years probation after she pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of patient neglect, but in January Judge Zmuda imposed a suspended 180-day jail sentence after she admitted to violating the terms of her probation.

Ms. Shay had been ordered to relinquish her nursing license, complete 200 hours of community service, and undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment, among other conditions.
