Toledoan repays fund he robbed

Money stolen from the scholarship fund Matthew Casey managed repaid in full.

A Toledo man has repaid money he stole from a scholarship fund he managed and has agreed to stop charitable solicitations under an agreement Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced recently.

Between 2005 and 2012, Matthew Casey made undocumented withdrawals from the Mike Casey Memorial Fund totalling $18,696.51, including a $3,600 transfer to his personal account and $3,046.51 in checks made out to himself, according to a statement from Mr. DeWine's office.

Mr. Casey has since repaid $12,862.50 to the fund, while another $5,834 in undocumented cash withdrawals was found to be for legitimate expenses for golf outings held for the memorial fund, named in honor of Mr. Casey's father.

Under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Casey will pay a $2,400 fine and will not hold any position in, or participate in soliciting donations for, any charitable organization in Ohio. Any failure to comply will be subject to a $40,000 penalty or actual damages.

"Those who oversee charities are obligated to make sure that the donations they receive go toward their designated purpose," Mr. DeWine said. "This case clearly shows that my office won't tolerate and will go after anyone who uses charitable funds for personal purposes."
