BOWLING GREEN – A Toledo man who previously said he wouldn’t plead guilty to something he “didn’t do,” admitted in Wood County Common Pleas Court today that he shot his girlfriend to death last year.

Jose Moya, Jr., 24, pleaded no contest to murder and a firearms specification in the July 22 death of Leandra Frankum, 21, of Perrysburg Township. Judge Alan Mayberry then sentenced Moya to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 18 years.

Prosecutors said Moya and Ms. Frankum had quarreled the night she was killed. She was shot once in the head at a home in the Perrysburg Heights neighborhood.

At a change of plea hearing in January, Moya told the court he wanted a new attorney because he wasn't seeing eye to eye with his counsel, Omar Shaaban, who had advised him to plead guilty in the case. Judge Mayberry subsequently appointed Adrian Cimerman to represent Moya.
