Toledo man pleads guilty to federal weapons, counterfeit charges

A Toledo man charged with possessing counterfeit goods and weapons pleaded guilty today to the charges in U.S. District Court.

Richard Schmidt, 47, of Marlow Road was then found guilty by Judge Jack Zouhary of two counts of being a felon in possession of firearms and one count each of being a felon in possession of body armor and trafficking in counterfeit goods. He faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 31.

Schmidt, who has a 1990 conviction for voluntary manslaughter, was arrested in December after FBI agents raided his West Toledo home and his business, Spindletop Sports Zone at the Woodland Mall in Bowling Green.

In addition to 18 firearms and more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition, authorities seized clothing and hats emblazoned with counterfeit logos for brands including the National Football League, Nike, Reebok, and Louis Vuitton.
