Toledo man not indicted in shooting incident

A Lucas County grand jury this week declined to indict a Toledo man arrested after his best friend was shot to death.

Denell Lewis, 23, had been charged by Toledo police with felonious assault and improper discharge of a firearm for allegedly shooting Anthony Porter Sept. 7 in the 100 block of West Park Street. The shooting occurred during an incident in which Mr. Lewis’ friend, James Bragg, 21, was shot to death in what police now say was a confrontation with the homeowner.

There have been no arrests in the shooting death of Mr. Bragg. Sgt. Joe Heffernan said Thursday that the shooting of Mr. Bragg “may have been in self-defense.” While police are still investigating the incident, they believe Mr. Bragg had a gun when he confronted the homeowner.
