DETROIT — A Monroe couple were sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court for their roles in a theft-and-tax-violation scheme.
John A. McCarter, 46, was sentenced by Judge Marianne Battani to 46 to 57 months in prison for interstate theft of tires and tax evasion. His wife, Katherine McCarter, 36, was placed on probation for three years for impeding the administration of Internal Revenue Service laws and presenting false documents to the FBI.
Federal prosecutors said the case arose from John McCarter’s theft of six semitrailers full of new tires and wheels from Kace Logistics in Romulus, Mich., in August, 2006, and October, 2007. The tires were then sold to a wholesale tire dealer in Knox, Pa.
McCarter also failed to declare and pay taxes on about $759,000 that he obtained from sales of new tires to the tire dealer.
