An 83-year-old Toledo man accused of fatally crashing into a pedestrian, then fleeing the scene appeared in court Thursday.

Robert Conboy of 5066 Jamieson Drive is charged with failure to stop after an accident. During arraignment in Toledo Municipal Court he was ordered to remain in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.

Police said Mr. Conboy was driving east in the curb lane on Alexis Road, approaching Rambo Lane, at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Donald Galdys, 59, of Toledo was walking west in the eastbound curb lane, when he was hit in front of 3515 W. Alexis.

A witness followed Mr. Conboy’s vehicle and reported the license plate to police, authorities said.

Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner, said Mr. Galdys died of multiple blunt force injuries to his chest and had a lacerated heart.

The area where Mr. Galdys was walking had been shoveled, but he was walking away from his apartment in the 3400 block of West Alexis where the sidewalk had not been cleared of snow.

Authorities were investigating the status of the shoveling. Whether or not snow removal and Mr. Galdys being in the road will have any effect on charges is unclear.

Mr. Conboy was scheduled to appear in court again today.
