Ex-cardiologist guilty on gun charges sentenced to halfway house

A former Maumee cardiologist who spent three months in state prison on drug charges was sentenced today to six months in a federal halfway house and was placed on supervised release for two years by U.S. District Court Judge James Carr.

Barry DeRan, 55, of Lambertville had pleaded guilty in federal court in August to one count of conspiracy and eight counts of aiding and abetting making false statements in the acquisition of firearms.

He admitted he conspired to purchase firearms from an Internet-based dealer by paying for the guns with a credit card, having them shipped to an Ohio gun dealer, and then having an employee from his medial practice pretend to be the buyer. DeRan was precluded from purchasing firearms at the time because he was under a one-year civil protection order from Lucas County Common Pleas Court for an unrelated incident.

DeRan previously surrendered his medical license as part of a plea agreement with the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office. He pleaded guilty in July to four counts each of aggravated possession of drugs and aggravated trafficking of drugs for improperly prescribing the pain medication OxyContin to people who were not his patients.

Common Pleas Judge Gene Zmuda sentenced him to 28 months in prison but released DeRan in December after he served just three months. The judge placed him on community control for four years and ordered him to complete 200 hours of community service before his sentencing in federal court on the gun charges.
