The former director of the Olander Park System in Sylvania was indicted Tuesday for theft in office by a Lucas County grand jury.

Gary Madrzykowski, 55, of 5160 Grosse Point Pkwy., was indicted on the fourth-degree felony for allegedly taking $4,412 in park funds between March 31, 2011 and July 23, 2013. An audit of the park system’s financial records by the Ohio Auditor’s Office revealed the alleged thefts and indicated that $3,544 had been repaid.

Mr. Madrzykowski resigned last August from his $71,000 a year post after Olander Park Commissioner John Zeitler confronted him over a $2,500 check he had written to himself from the park system’s bank account. He repaid the money and said at that time that he was moving to Florida.

“We immediately brought the state examiner in to look at the situation and audit us, and we are glad it worked,” Mr. Zeitler said Tuesday.
