A Toledo man who stole thousands of dollars from an elderly woman after telling her they had won the lottery is to be sentenced Sept. 2 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Shawn Goodluck, 29, of 1311 Colburn St., entered an Alford plea last week to theft from an elderly person or disabled adult. In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit to committing a crime, but acknowledges evidence is sufficient for a conviction that could result in a more severe sentence.

Charles McDonald, an assistant Lucas County prosecutor, said Goodluck did odd jobs for the 90-year-old victim. He told her they’d won the lottery but had to pay the taxes first.

She drained her savings and cashed in certificates of deposit, then gave the money to Goodluck who, Mr. McDonald said, spent it at Hollywood Casino Toledo.

His wife, Jamie Goodluck, 35, was indicted on the same charges. Her case is set for trial Sept. 2.
