Toledo man convicted of reckless homicide in April 13 strangulation death of woman

Incident occurred after 'rough sex that went horribly wrong,' prosecutors say

Denzil Wells II was found guilty Aug. 6 of reckless homicide and obstructing justice in the Toledo woman’s death, which prosecutors said occurred after “rough sex that went horribly wrong.”

A Lucas County judge today gave the maximum sentence – four years in prison -- to a Toledo man convicted of reckless homicide in the April 13 strangulation of Nicole Sours.

Denzil Wells II, 41, of 1411 Brooke Park Drive, was found guilty Aug. 6 of reckless homicide and obstructing justice in the Toledo woman’s death, which prosecutors said occurred after “rough sex that went horribly wrong.”

Wells entered an Alford plea to the charges, which means he did not admit guilt but acknowledged evidence was sufficient for a conviction that could result in a more severe sentence.

Ms. Sours, 37, was found dead in Wells’ bed at his apartment after he had picked her up from work at the Pour House, a West Toledo bar. An autopsy concluded she had been strangled.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gene Zmuda told Wells he had a history of violence, including domestic violence, that warranted the maximum sentence on each charge to be served consecutively. He also ordered that Wells serve 251 days of post release control – formerly known as parole – that was left from a 2010 conviction for felonious assault.

“I know the type of person you are and I know what you deserve, and I shall impose it at this time,” the judge told him.
