Everybody's up about 'Up'

5/29/2009

"...as human beings we are capable of making sense of situations based on the thinnest slice of experience."

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point.

THE MAGIC TOUCH: The folks at Pixar know a thing or two about making great animated films, the latest being Up, which is getting rave reviews. Then there's Toy Story, Wall-E, and a host of others. (RL)

SAY IT AIN'T SO: Yikes, poor Susan Boyle. First there's the cussing incident and now they're saying she might not even win Britain's Got Talent, and wouldn't you know, the British are getting tired of her. The price of fame is more than a makeover, ay? (RL)

SUSAN BOYLE GOES OFF: And it's about time! After apparently being harassed by a tabloid journalist she launched an obscenity-laden tirade that has been picked up by the gang on Fleet Street. And word is that she's considered bailing on Britain's Got Talent, the show that brought her unlikely fame. (RL)

INSERT CONSPIRACY THEORY HERE: There's a bit more explanation for the American Idol AT&T phone-in controversy that sullied the results of last week's voting. Meanwhile, the folks at Fox are shouting hooray at the extra publicity. (RL)

FOUL!!!!: Fans of Adam Lambert could have an explanation why the clearly more talented American Idol contestant lost. AT&T may have skewed the results by handing out free text messaging services at parties for winner Kris Allen's fans in Arkansas. Allen just happens to be from Arkansas. AI rigged? Next thing you know we're going to find out baseball players take steroids or something. (RL)

THIS IS SAD: Let's just come out and say it: the Thin Slices crew does not watch Jon & Kate Plus 8. Why? Because we don't care. But the fact that they're marriage is breaking up on TV and the fact that Hulk Hogan and his wife ruined their marriage on TV, ought to force people connect the dots that make it obvious that unless you're Gene Simmons -- who, no matter what you think of him, is keenly aware that this is show biz and treats it accordingly -- reality TV is a pretty bad idea for your family. (RL)

LOOKING FOR THE NEXT SUSAN BOYLE: USA Today is trying to find an American Susan Boyle -- someone who can sing like a bird whilst living a "normal life" -- who is easily dominating Britain's version of American Idol. We think the folks at USA Today should be careful what they ask for or they're going to be bombarded with videos of folks who only think they can sing like Boyle. Kind of like, um, American Idol. (RL)

MAYBE IT WAS THE WEATHER: Turns out that the Memorial Day weekend wasn't a box office bonanza for movies, what with Terminator Salvation sucking wind --and getting weak reviews. We don't know about you, but given the pristine weather this weekend here in Toledo, it would be hard to sit around in a theater watching a bunch of androids whack a bunch of humans. (RL)
