Les Paul, a Thin Slices hero, dies

8/14/2009

"...as human beings we are capable of making sense of situations based on the thinnest slice of experience."

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point.

GOODBYE TO A GREAT: Les Paul, guitarist, innovator and inventor, passed away Thursday at the age of 94. Along with Leo Fender, he was the technological genius who made rock and roll possible. As late as last year he was still playing shows. Here's a clip of him and Chet Atkins tackling "Birth of the Blues." (RL)

THE WOODSTOCK NATION: Baby boomers throughout the country get to wallow in 40 year old memories of mud, sloppy music, and one of the biggest cultural events (how do we know it's so big? Because they tell us it is) in the history of mankind. It's Woodstock, of course, the festival of peace, love and understanding in a muddy field. Here's what some of the "stars" of the show are still doing and a review of the VH1 special on the event that airs Friday. (RL)

TUNING UP: Would-be rockers pretended to rock at the US Air Guitar Championships took place earlier this week, presenting us with the sound of one hand strumming. Here's a video of Round Two featuring overall winner, William Ocean, and photos of the finalists. (RS)

SEQUEL CITY: With all the talk about a Red Dawn remake and other sequels always being bantered around, here are some more that are supposedly in the works. (RS)

TO OUR LOYAL READER(S): Sorry for the absence over the past week. Big bad deadlines, computer malfunctions and other stuff kept the Thin Slices staff at bay. But we're baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.
