Festivals celebrate apples, apple butter
10/10/2013The 35th annual Oak Harbor Apple Festival will kick off Saturday in downtown Oak Harbor.
The streets will be filled with activities, including carnival rides and games, a craft show, and live music.
Live entertainment will be provided by choirs from the Oak Harbor school district and area dance studios. The crowning of the Apple Queen and baking contest winners will be Saturday, along with the grand parade, which starts at 2 p.m.
Other activities are planned for Sunday. The festival is free. A shuttle will be available at the high school parking lot.

● Also this weekend is the Grand Rapids Applebutter Fest on Sunday. The event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. draws thousands of people to the picturesque village on the banks of the Maumee River. Apple butter will be made, there will be historical re-enactors, crafts will be sold, and there will be plenty of food and entertainment. For parking, follow the “BIG RED APPLE” signs to the four festival parking lots in or near Grand Rapids.
Shuttle bus rides to the festival are free with your $10 per car admission. The lots and shuttle buses are handicapped accessible.
● The third annual Northwest Ohio Natural Hair & Beauty Expo will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the New Life Center, 1430 W. Bancroft St. The expo will focus on the health benefits of having chemical-free hair, and will offer products, services, and merchandise for those with natural hair.
There will be workshops on the science of black hair, natural hair education, kids natural hair care, holistic health, fitness, skin care, and extreme couponing. Live performances include spoken word by New Orleans artist Ophelia, singer Nate Suave Cameron, and poet Huntor Prey. Kids 12 and younger are admitted free. Adult admission is $10 for just the expo and $15 for the expo and workshops.

● The grounds of the Wolcott House Museum complex will be open for exploring during the complex’s family fall festival Sunday. There will be oldfashioned games, crafts, candle making, refreshments, and a variety of other activities. New this year will be antique tractors and a horsemanship demonstration. The free event is from noon to 4 p.m. at 1035 River Rd. in Maumee. Information: wolcotthouse.org.
