`Mr. Fix-It' donated his skills
2/15/2003GIBSONBURG, Ohio - Richard L. “Pug” Shreffler, a former member of the Gibsonburg school board, died of cancer Thursday in his home here. He was 66.
Mr. Shreffler lived in Gibsonburg his entire life.
He graduated in 1954 from Gibsonburg High School, where he was a forward on the basketball team. He played during the first year the team made it to the state's final four.
Mr. Shreffler continued attending high school games for many years. He led efforts to build a new concession stand at the football stadium.
He was on the school board for nine years, serving as president for part of that time.
“Whatever he took on, he did a good job and followed through,” said John Schell, another former school board member.
Mr. Shreffler worked for 36 years with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 50, retiring in 1998.
“He was a Mr. Fix-It,” his wife, Carolyn, said. “He would do anything for anyone.”
He often did repairs for friends and neighbors. Mr. Shreffler installed a new furnace and air conditioning for free at his parish, St. Michael's Catholic Church in Gibsonburg.
Mr. Shreffler coached Little League for a few years and enjoyed attending the sporting events of his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn; son, Steven; daughter, Debbie Borcherding; brothers, George and Walter; sister, Janet McClish, and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church. The body will be in the Nopper-Veh Funeral Home, Gibsonburg, after 7 p.m. today.
The family requests tributes to the Gibsonburg Athletic Boosters or Hospice of Memorial Hospital in Clyde, Ohio.
