BOWLING GREEN - Joseph L. Corral, 68, a former city councilman who co-founded a drug treatment program, died Sunday at his home here.

The family did not know the cause of death, his son, Brandt, said.

Mr. Corral was involved with many local government and community organizations.

“It was a desire to help other people and make a difference,” his son said.

Mr. Corral was one of the founders of KARMA, a Wood County substance abuse program that became part of The Link. He was a board member of The Link in the 1970s and 1980s.

From 1976 to 1982, Mr. Corral served three terms on city council. He was administrator of North Baltimore, Ohio, from 1990 to 1992.

Mr. Corral also worked with the chambers of commerce of Bowling Green, North Baltimore, and Findlay, and was a past president of the Bowling Green Jaycees.

Mr. Corral was born April 1, 1935, in Ashland, Ohio, where he graduated from high school. He married Judy Long in 1962.

He attended college for a few years, and joined the Army. He was a paratrooper in the Korean War, his son said.

After the Army, he became a technician for Columbia Gas of Ohio in 1956. In 1990, he retired as a commercial marketing representative. “He started as a meter reader and worked his way up,” his son said.

Even though Mr. Corral was out of the house a great deal of the time, on the weekends the family often went camping, Brandt Corral said. Later, they had a weekend place in Indiana, where they went water skiing and boating, he said.

He said in 1976, Mr. Corral and some friends built a pontoon boat from the ground up, painting it red, white, and blue.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Corral; sons, Brandt and Jamie Corral; daughter, Jill Corral; sisters, Margaret Moreno, Georgian Roberts, Doris Courtright, and Frances Weiler, and eight grandchildren.

The body will be in the Dunn Funeral Home after 2 p.m. today. Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in St. Mark s Lutheran Church.

The family suggests tributes to the Wood County unit of the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or The Link.
