Internist practiced more than 40 years
5/15/2004Dr. Mervin E. Green, who practiced internal medicine and cardiology in Toledo for more than 40 years, died Thursday in his Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., home. He was 91.
Though not in ill health, he had heart problems, his wife, Mayta, said. The couple moved from Ottawa Hills four years ago, she said.
Dr. Green began his medical practice with an office on Michigan Street in downtown Toledo and retired in 1987 from an office on Harroun Road in Sylvania. For much of his practice, he was on staff at all area hospitals.
Dr. Green was a former president of the Northwestern Ohio Heart Association and was a former trustee of the Ohio State Heart Association.
He was a graduate of Scott High School. He received his bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. He taught at the medical school there for two years before Army Air Force service during World War II. He was stationed at the Everett, Wash., base hospital.
Dr. Green was supportive of his wife Mayta's community and cultural activities, which he became involved in, too.
He was a former board member of the Toledo Opera Association and of the Alzheimer's Association.
He was a member of the Temple-Congregation Shomer Emunim and of Congregation B'nai Israel.
He had been a member of the former Glengarry Country Club and of the Belmont Country Club.
Dr. Gross and his first wife, the former Paulette Gross, married Aug. 1, 1950. She died July 30, 1956.
Surviving are his current wife, Mayta, whom he married Sept. 22, 1962; daughters, Laurie Green, Patricia Csillag, and Lisa Kilcorse, and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Temple-Congregation Shomer Emunim. Friends will be received afterward through Tuesday evening at the Sylvania Township home of Laurie and Richard Green. Arrangements are by the Robert H. Wick/Wisniewski Mortuary.
The family suggests tributes to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio or a charity of the donor's choice.
