Obstetrician had 40-year career in Sandusky area
8/12/2004SANDUSKY - James E. Printy, an obstetrician and gynecologist here for about 40 years, died Sunday in Parkvue Health Care Center. He was 80.
He had Alzheimer's and had contracted an infection, his daughter Susan Printy said.
Dr. Printy began practicing medicine here in 1952 and served as chief of gynecology at Providence Hospital and as chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the former Good Samaritan Hospital.
"He just had a deep caring for people and wanted to help them," Ms. Printy said.
When a physician here recruited Dr. Printy after medical school, he became the second ob/gyn in town, his son Mike Printy said.
"They were very busy back in those days," he said.
His son Brian Printy, now an ob/gyn in his father's former practice, said his father made house calls and had done home births when he was a resident in Toledo.
He said his father was a family man.
"He liked participating in families, helping families get their start," the younger Dr. Printy said.
Dr. Printy served on the Perkins Public Schools board from 1974 to 1988 and was the school team physician for 27 years. He was recognized by the Ohio High School Athletic Association in 1980 and inducted into the Ohio High School Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Perkins Schools Hall of Fame in 2002.
Dr. Printy was born in Toledo on March 15, 1924. In 1941, he graduated from Central Catholic High School, where he played football and was chosen for the all-city team.
He went to Georgetown University on a four-year football scholarship, but hurt his knee during his freshman year and was unable to play.
He received his medical degree from Georgetown as well, and then served as a captain in the Air Force, stationed in Florida.
He enjoyed golf and boating, and never missed a sporting event, Mike Printy said.
He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, the Sandusky Yacht Club, Plum Brook Country Club, Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, E. Jeanne Printy; sons, Michael, Gary, Matthew, John, Dean, Jeffrey, and Brian Printy; daughters, Susan Printy, Patricia Klohn, Nancy Nagai, and Beth Palmison; brother, M. Richard Printy; 23 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon today at Ss. Peter and Paul Church here.
The family suggests tributes to the church memorial fund, the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, The Community at Parkvue, or a charity of the donor's choice.
