Edward V. Schad, 85, a retired longtime teacher at Frank Elementary School in Perrysburg, died of an apparent heart attack Sunday in St. Luke's Hospital.

Mr. Schad taught fifth and sixth grades at Frank Elementary for 25 years, from 1960 until retiring in 1985.

During that time he also drove a school bus at the elementary and taught driver's education classes.

"As a teacher, he was terrific," said Fritz Lattin, a former teacher colleague at Frank Elementary and Mr. Schad's instructor at the time Mr. Schad was a student teacher there.

"He was very popular with kids. He just had a way about him. He loved teaching the kids, and that bubbled out."

Dinah Garrison, Mr. Lattin's daughter, who attended Frank Elementary in the 1960s, agreed.

She went on to say that Mr. Schad enjoyed doing recess duty and often helped other teachers with it.

A native of Cadillac, Mich., Mr. Schad was a graduate of Macomber High School and received bachelor's and master's degrees, both in education, from the University of Toledo.

Mr. Lattin remembered that at the time Mr. Schad was still a UT student he never missed an assignment. Mr. Lattin also remembers that Mr. Schad did well as a student-teacher.

In retirement, Mr. Schad, who lived in Maumee, enjoyed traveling around the United States in his motor home with his wife of 56 years, Virginia Schad.

Mr. Schad was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Maumee.

His other memberships included the Wood County Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Schad; daughter, Suzanne Schad; son David Schad; brother, Glenn Schad; and sister, Norma Englehardt.

Services are at 11 a.m. today in the Walter Funeral Home.

The family suggests tributes to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maumee or Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet.
