Engineer served on Delphos council

DELPHOS, Ohio - Jack L. Swick, 73, a retired engineer who was a former longtime city councilman-at-large here, died of emphysema Thursday in St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio.

Mr. Swick was a councilman-at-large on the Delphos City Council for 12 years, in the 1970s and 1980s.

He retired about eight years ago after working in sales for a time for MetoKote Corp., an automotive, agricultural, and construction equipment powder-coating and painting plant in Lima.

Before that, he was an industrial engineer for more than 20 years at the former Huffy Manufacturing, an automotive service plant here.

"The big thing with him was involvement with the community and the good that he could do for it," his son, Jack Swick II, said.

"I think he was highly regarded."

A native of Delphos, the elder Mr. Swick graduated in 1951 from Delphos Jefferson High School.

He later was a Radarman 2nd Class in the Navy during the Korean War in the United States and Panama.

Mr. Swick was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, both in Delphos. His other memberships included the Delphos Jaycees, of which he was a past president.

He also was an avid bowler.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth; sons, Jack, Gregory, Michael, and Daniel; daughter, Laura Hammons; 11 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

Visitation will take place after 2 p.m. today in the Harter and Schier Funeral Home, Delphos, where a wake service is set for 7:30 tonight. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos.

The family suggests tributes to the American Lung Association or a charity of the donor's choice.
