Store owner was Korean War veteran

RISINGSUN, Ohio - Marvin G. "Bud" Green, 77, former owner of a general store founded by his mother that became a fixture in this Wood County village, died Wednesday in his home.

He had Pick's disease, a condition that causes brain deterioration, his sister, Betty Bockbrader, said.

He and his wife, Jean, owned Green's Store until they sold the business in 1995. He'd worked there full time since returning in the early 1950s from Army service in the Korean War.

His mother, Sarah, founded the store in 1926 and was joined in the business later by his father, Harley. His mother died in 1963; his father retired in the early 1970s and died in 1980.

The store "was kind of a mainstay of a small town," his sister said. "It was a gathering place. You never turned anybody away. Back then, people in the area didn't even go into Fostoria. They did their shopping in Risingsun."

The store was open every day, including Sunday mornings. Still, someone could call the Greens' on a Sunday afternoon, say company had just dropped by from out of town, and the family would open the store.

He was a graduate of the former Risingsun High School and attended Bowling Green State University. A longtime Mason, he was a member of the Zenobia Shrine and became active in the Jeepster and Road Runner units in retirement especially.

He was a former Risingsun firefighter.

He and his wife married Oct. 28, 1950. She died Nov. 18, 2004.

Surviving are his son, Jack Green, and sister, Betty Bockbrader.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in the Mann-Hare-Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria.

The family suggests tributes to the Shrine Endowment Fund or the vision fund at First Church of God in Risingsun, of which Mr. Green was a member.
