Engineer served on council in Tiffin
4/6/2009TIFFIN - Harry Allan Dom, a former Tiffin city councilman who for years was a mechanical engineer at National Machinery, died Thursday in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center's Regional Heart & Vascular Center in Toledo. He was 84.
He went to the hospital with a blood infection and kidney failure, said his daughter, Deborah Dom.
Long interested in Republican politics, Mr. Dom served two terms on City Council, but not before being defeated in a nail-biter election, she said.
"The first election that he ran for, he lost by one vote. He had a recount; he won by three votes. He had a [final] rerecount, and he lost by two votes," Ms. Dom said.
A graduate of the former Macomber Vocational High School in Toledo, Mr. Dom studied mechanical engineering at the University of Toledo and served in the U.S. Army during World War II before landing a job with National Machinery in Tiffin.
He was employed there for more than 25 years, and his name was attached to numerous patents, said his son, Dennis Dom.
Active in the community, he tutored elementary school students, worked with the Boy Scouts and Big Brothers Big Sisters, and championed city parks.
"He kept his life simple, but he was always involved helping people," Dennis Dom said.
Surviving are his son, Dennis; daughters, Deborah and Darcy Dom, and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Engle-Shook Funeral Home, Tiffin, where the body will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Burial at Greenlawn Cemetery will follow the funeral services.
The family suggests tributes to Lincoln Elementary School in Tiffin, Big Brothers Big Sisters, or the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
