Dorothy M. Newland, 1922-2010: Lima woman co-owned bars, cafe

LIMA, Ohio - Dorothy M. Newland of Lima and formerly of Kenton, Ohio, co-owner of the former Roxy Bar & Grill in Wapakoneta and the former Court Cafe and Circus Bar in Bellefontaine, Ohio, died Friday in Springview Manor Nursing Home in Lima. She was 88.

Ms. Newland had not been well for the last few days, her son Richard Charles Newland said.

The family did not know the cause of death.

"She was a very easy-going, very kind lady. She never had a bad word to say about anybody," Mr. Newland said.

"She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them - playing with and entertaining them when they were younger and going to their band concerts when they grew older, among other things," he said.

Ms. Newland and her husband owned the Roxy Bar & Grill from the early 1960s until they sold it in the mid-1980s.

They bought the Court Cafe and the Circus Bar from in the mid-1980s and sold them when the couple retired in the mid to late 1990s.

Ms. Newland was the cook at the businesses.

She also was the cook for the Logan County jail for about 12 years before retiring at the start of 1990.

A native of Lima, Ms. Newland, whose maiden name was Hanthorn, attended the former South High School.

In 1940, she married Richard Lee Newland. He died in 2008.

Besides spending time with her grandchildren, in her free time, Ms. Newland enjoyed playing bingo and watching soap operas on television.

Surviving are her sons, Richard Charles Newland and James Newland; brother, William Hanthorn; sister, Dolores Garcia; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at noon Tuesday in the Myron Van Horn Chapel of Smith-Eichholtz Funeral Home, 115 North Main St. in Lakeview, Ohio.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. the same day.

The family suggests tributes to Springview Manor Activity Department, 883 West Spring St., Lima.
