Longtime resident of Old West End aided less fortunate
3/14/2011Harold T. Hanley, Jr., 84, a longtime Old West End resident who was active with neighborhood groups and was a strong advocate for the less fortunate, died Friday at Sunset House.
He died of natural causes, said his son Larry Hanley.
Even after he moved from his home on Scottwood Avenue one block from Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, he and his wife of nearly 60 years, Mary, remained active in the parish.
Mr. Hanley served there as an usher for 40 years and was active in parish organizations, his son said.
Mr. Hanley was born Feb. 6, 1927, in Toledo to Harold T. Hanley, Sr., and Helen Neeb Hanley.
He was a DeVilbiss High School graduate. He received a law degree from the University of Toledo in 1954 and took a job with the Internal Revenue Service as an examiner of income taxes and federal estate and gift taxes.
A year later, his father died suddenly and Mr. Hanley took over his father's practice, son Mike said.
In 1977, he closed his private practice and accepted a position with the state auditor's office for its Toledo region. He retired in 1990.
As a state examiner, he was responsible for auditing the financial records of municipalities in northwest Ohio, son Mike said.
Despite his busy career and his work with his parish and outside organizations, Mr. Hanley also had time for his family, said daughter Cathy Zink.
"He was totally dedicated to us, every minute of the day. He was never too busy for us," she said.
Harold Hanley, Sr., was among the founders of the local Catholic Youth Organization and later was a coach of CYO programs at Gesu Catholic Church. Harold Hanley, Jr., became involved as well, helping coach baseball and football there.
Son Larry said after he and his siblings began attending school at Rosary Cathedral, their father became a Little League baseball coach and a coach for CYO football.
"When he had his own kids at Cathedral, he was always involved in coaching," son Larry recalled.
Mr. Hanley was a board member of Toledo Central City Ministries, which was formed to make a difference in central-city neighborhoods by rehabilitating and building houses.
He was involved in the Old West End Association and he took on a role with the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
Daughter Kathy said her father served as president of St. Vincent de Paul for about 10 years, and both of her parents were active in the organization that assists the needy. Until recently, his reach with the organization extended beyond Rosary Cathedral to other parishes in Toledo and beyond.
His other associations included the Holy Name Society at Rosary Cathedral, the Downtown Coaches, and the St. Francis de Sales Brisson Association.
Mr. Hanley married his college sweetheart, Mary Colleen Stallkamp, in 1951. The couple had six children, one of whom, Ann Mary, died as an infant.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons Harold III, Larry, Mike, Terrance, and Patrick; daughter Cathy Zink; brothers Richard and Donald; sister Joan Klear; 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
His funeral is to begin at 9:15 a.m. Monday at Coyle Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Rosary Cathedral. Memorials are suggested to Rosary Cathedral or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
