Dinner Tonight: Pita Burgers

"Our young kids love these,“ says Melissa Kaufman Deku in Olives, Feta, Phyllo & More. ”We call them Greek hamburgers. They are similar to the gyros.“

 

Pita Burgers

From Olives, Feta, Phyllo & More: Classic & Contemporary Greek & American Cuisine compiled by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

2 cups shredded lettuce

1 medium cucumber, seeded and chopped

1 cup reduced fat plain yogurt

1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 garlic clove, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed

1/2 teaspoon dried basil

1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef

6 whole pita breads, halved

In a bowl, combine lettuce, cucumber, yogurt and sesame seeds. Set aside.

In another bowl, combine onion, garlic and seasonings. Crumble beef over the top and mix well. Shape into six patties. Broil or grill meat until it is done to your taste.

Cut burgers in half. Place each in pita half and top with lettuce-yogurt mixture.

Makes 6 servings.
