Northwood: Street department sets brush, leaf pickups

10/11/2006

The Northwood Street Department has slated its annual fall brush pickup for next week and its annual leaf pickup the week of Oct. 22.

City officials said brush is to be curbside or by the edge of the road by 7 a.m. on Monday.

Brush should be piled with cut ends facing toward the street. The largest branches should not exceed four inches in diameter.

None should be tied or bundled. Small clippings, hedge trimmings, and twigs should be put into garbage cans for refuse pickup.

Crews will go through the city once and not return for brush put out late or placed in alleys. There is no brush drop-off at the city municipal building.

Leaf pickup, which will start Oct. 23, will continue on a rotating basis throughout the city as long as necessary or until the first major snowfall.

Residents are asked to rake the leaves to the curb or edge of the roadway on unimproved streets, not into the streets. Piles of leaves mixed with bushes, tree limbs, or other material will not be collected.

The Guidance Department of Northwood High School will host a College Information Night Oct. 17 at 7. It is open to all high school parents, especially of juniors and seniors.

Topics include the ACT and SAT, selection, admission criteria, application procedures, visits, private vs. state school, and a financial-aid and planning timetable.

Being cognizant of their surroundings and knowing a bit of self-defense could save children's lives.

To teach them these skills, James Taylor is offering a free child safety awareness program from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday at Taylor's Tae Kwon Do, 603 Main St. in Genoa. Mr. Taylor, owner and operator, plans to teach how to avoid potentially dangerous situations and basic kicks and jabs to use in case of trouble.

The program is open to the community and geared toward children between 5 and 12.

Brush pickup for the unincorporated areas of Lake Township will start on Monday, Lake Township trustees said.

Pickup for those living in areas east of I-280 will be from Monday to Oct. 19.

Pickup for those living in areas west of I-280 will be from Oct. 23 to Oct. 26.

Brush should be put into place by 7:30 a.m. on the first day of the scheduled pickup.

It should be stacked neatly at the road edge with the butt ends of all branches nearer the road.

Garbage, yard waste, and objects other than brush and limbs will not be collected.

Brush deemed unchippable will be photographed by members of the Lake Township Road Department.

A Lake Township trustee will make the final determination on the proper disposal of the brush pile within 24 hours.
