Students from 38 schools in annual writing contest

The Power of the Pen Regional Tournament was held March 15 at Findlay High School, with 38 schools and 188 seventh and eighth grade students taking part in the annual writing competition.

The grade seven contest results are as follows:

Emily Durbak, St. Joseph School in Sylvania, 1st; Eileen Iannone of St. Pius X School in Toledo, 2nd, and Taylor Tweed of Central Middle School in Findlay, 3rd. Lydia Bruler of St. Michael School in Findlay, 4th; Sean Wheelock of St. John's Jesuit Academy in Toledo, 5th; Kayleigh Overmyer of Gateway Middle School in Maumee, 6th; Emily Thomas of Pike-Delta-York Middle School in Delta, 7th; Mara Kalinoski of St. Pius X School of Toledo, 8th; Molly Ziemkiewicz of St. Joseph School in Sylvania, 9th; Michelle Li of Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania, 10th; Olivia Hauser of St. Piux X School in Toledo, 11th; Katlin Sarantou of St. Catherine of Siena School in Toledo, 12th; Samantha Melillo of Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania, 13th; Courtney Dane of St. Rose School in Perrysburg, 14th, and Alana Marsh, Perrysburg Junior High School, 15th.

The grade seven overall school rankings were: St. Joseph School in Sylvania, first; St. Rose School in Perrysburg, second; McCord Junior HIgh School in Sylvania, third, and Central Middle School in Findlay, fourth.

Grade eight contestant results are as follows:

Stephen Owczarzak of Fassett Middle School in Oregon, 1st; Jack Olesky of Donnell Middle School in Findlay, 2nd, and Chris Perry of Tiffin Middle School in Tiffin, 3rd. Leah Cramer of St. Michael School in Findlay, 4th; Jayci Steingass of Napoleon Middle School, 5th; Breanna Crye of Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania, 6th; Conor Wilkinson of Gesu School in Toledo, 7th; Erin Owens of Sylvania Arbor Hills Junior High in Sylvania, 8th; Randy Ulinski of Fassett Middle School in Oregon, 9th; Joe Yanos of Gesu School in Toledo, 10th; Dalla Lee of Toledo Christian School, 11th; Michelle Ki of Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania, 12th; Riley Savage of St. Joseph School in Sylvania, 13th; Charles Filipiak of St. Joseph School in Sylvania, 14th, and Dan Coutcher of Gateway Middle School in Maumee, 15th.

The grade eight overall school rankings are Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania, first; Central Middle School in Findlay, second; Gesu School in Toledo, third, and St. Rose School in Perrysburg, fourth.

School rankings for the combined seventh and eighth grade contest results are St. Joseph School of Sylvania, first; St. Rose School in Perrysburg, second; Central Middle School in Findlay, third; Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania, fourth, and St. Michael School in Findlay, fifth.

The top seventh and eighth grade contestants, 26 students in all, qualified for the next stage of the contest and will compete on May 23 in the state competition at the College of Wooster.
