• Penta Pit Stops, for area high school students planning to attend Penta Career Center this fall and who need to turn in registration forms, take yearbook and school identification photos, order uniforms, and gather information for the coming school year. Pit Stops will be held at Penta s current campus, 30095 Oregon Rd., Perrysburg Township, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 17, and 1 to 7 p.m. July 31. The process takes about two hours. • Teacher s workshop with bus tour to Historic Roscoe Village, sponsored by the Maumee Valley Historical Society, 1035 River Rd., Maumee, July 8, for teachers to earn 10 contact hours. • Backpack to the Future collects gently used backpacks to donate to low-income families. Camps

• Nature Camp: Session 1, Wildwood Preserve, Metroparks Hall, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A week of nature discovery and exploration, beginning July 7, for 7 to 12 year olds. Activities, games, living history and stewardship projects--each day with a different focus. Home base is Wildwood Preserve Metropark with two days of field trips to enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, wildlife watching, a sand dunes hike and fossil hunting. Metroparks and program partners will provide exciting field trips to Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, Fossil Park, Lathrop House and Olander Park. Camp held rain or shine with back up rainy day plans. Equipment, supplies and field trip transportation will be provided. • Detroit Pistons Youth Basketball Training Camp, for youth in grades 1-11. Camp instructors will include Detroit Pistons officials and players, Michigan college and high school coaches, and current and former collegiate basketball superstars. Participants will be evaluated on their skill level and compete in games and contests. Festivals

• Middle Eastern Summer Festival at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 3754 Woodley Rd., 4 p.m. to midnight July 18, noon to midnight July 19, and noon to 6 p.m. July 20. Children 10 years and under are free all weekend. Admission Friday and Saturday is $3 and on Sunday $2. Middle Eastern foods will be available all weekend, including stuffed grape leaves, raw and baked kibbee, green beans and meat over rice, meat pies, salad, french fries, hot dogs, gyros, falafel, hommus, Kafta burgers, Fatoosh and more. Pastry booth will include homemade Lebanese pastries, ice cream, rice pudding, Zalabee, lemonade, frozen drinks, beer and wine wagon. The Middle Eastern ensemble Al-Layali of Cleveland will provide entertainment Friday and Saturday, on Sunday there will be a DJ by Karazz. Dance ensemble will be Leyla & Lapis Lazuli. Children s activities to include pony rides, petting zoo, moonwalk, monkey jump, face painting. Marketplace will have homemade jewelry and purses, Hooka Bar, coffee house with Turkish coffee, and tours of the Cathedral available.

Metroparks

• Fourth of July: 1876 Celebration, Providence, Kimble s Landing, 13827 U.S. 24 West, Grand Rapids, Ohio, noon to 4 p.m. July 4. Celebrate the nation s centennial by taking a journey aboard the canal boat, The Volunteer. See historic wood craft demonstrations and tour the Isaac Ludwig Mill or shop in the General Store. Various craftspeople will be on hand to demonstrate blacksmithing, tinsmithing, woodcarving, and hands-on crafts and activities for the family. The Volunteer runs on the hour, noon to 4 p.m. and tickets, for a small fee, are available at the ticketbooth. Event is free.

Visit the Isaac Ludwig Mill and watch renowned blacksmith, Don Witzler forge silver into bracelets, pendants, and other decorative and useful items. This unique process involves annealing sterling silver which is then hammered into its final form. Free.
