Amateur Notes: Owens team aims to raise funds at 'Volley for Cure' this weekend

The Owens Community College volleyball team is holding a fund-raising event in support of breast cancer awareness and research at its game Saturday.

The Express is hosting a "Volley for the Cure" event at its home match against Sinclair Community College. Donations are requested in support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The match begins at 11 a.m. and will take place in the college's Student Health and Activities Center on the Toledo-area campus on Oregon Road in Perrysburg Township.

Donations will be accepted at a designated table inside the Student Health and Activities Center gymnasium entrance. In addition, the team will wear pink shirts during the match.

A bake sale and game ball raffle also will be held. All proceeds will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is the world's largest network of breast cancer survivors and activists.

CURLING: The Bowling Green Curling Club opened its 40th season by hosting its annual Early Bird Bonspiel on Sept. 27-28.

Twenty-four teams from several states and Canada competed at the Bowling Green State University Ice Arena.

In the finals, the Bowling Green club won both the A and B division titles.

Bowling Green's Freeman team defeated the Kortebein team from Knoxville, Tenn., in the A division. The local club's Piroth team won against the Buchanan team from Shelbourne, Ont., in the B division.

In the C division final, the Roberts team from Detroit defeated the Klein rink from Dundas Valley, Ont..

The Bowling Green Curling Club will host several open curling sessions in mid-October to give anyone of any age a chance to try the sport.

The open sessions will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Oct. 17 at the BGSU Ice Arena on Mercer Road in Bowling Green. Cost is $10 per person. Club members will be on hand to provide basic instruction and then participants will have a chance to play a game.

HOCKEY: The Toledo Cherokee junior hockey team has gotten off to a perfect start with a 5-0-0 record.

The Cherokee, a Junior A team, has outscored its opponents 30-14. Toledo is in third place in the Central States Hockey League entering play last weekend.

The Cherokee got two wins over Quad City at the Team Toledo Ice House Sept. 27-28. Toledo won by scores of 6-4 and 5-2 over the team from Davenport, Iowa.

On Sept. 27, Northview graduate Carter Bourland scored two goals in the first game. Andrew Kolb, a Central Catholic graduate, had a goal and two assists. Matt Cook (Northview) also had a goal and an assist while Brent Bain (Northview) had three assists.

On Sept. 28, Toledo jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on as Kolb netted two goals. Evan Johnston (Southview), Adam Pigula (Bedford), and Bain each chipped in with a goal apiece.

CHARITY EVENT: The Owens Community College Alumni Association raised $32,000 at its sixth annual Golf Classic event Sept. 29. More than 125 individuals and 31 teams participated in the four-person scramble event to support alumni scholarship programs. The outing was at the Belmont Country Club in Perrysburg and featured 18-holes.

A team sponsored by Mid-American Cleaning Contractors Inc. of Lima won the championship. The team members were Bob Swan, John Whittaker, Joe Whittaker, and Kevin McNeil.

Since its inception, the Golf Classic has raised more than $180,000.

"The Golf Classic was a huge success and would not have been possible without the overwhelming support of northwest Ohio's business and industry, as well as Owens alumni," said Laura Moore, Owens Alumni Association executive director.
