Oregon resident finishes in the money in PBA women's tourney

Oregon resident Jodi Woessner took 13th place at the PBA Women's Series season-opening tournament.

Woessner finished with an average of 199.64 at the Pepsi Viper Championship in Omaha, Neb., Oct. 29-Nov. 2. She earned $1,800 for her efforts.

Woessner, 38, qualified to be a member of the PBA Women's Series with her performance at the U.S. Women's Open in August in Romeoville, Ill. Woessner finished among the top 12 and advanced to compete in the PBA Women's Series.

The PBA Women's Series features 16 exempt bowlers. It debuted in 2007 after the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) folded in 2003. The series has seven events and runs in conjunction with the PBA Tour.

The championship match of each event will be televised live on ESPN as part of the regular PBA Tour telecast and will feature a $51,000 prize fund, including $10,000 for the winner.

Woessner will compete in the next event, the Chameleon Championship Women's Series, which is being held now through Sunday in Taylor, Mich.

MOTORCYCLE RACING: Swanton resident Dean Druschel has won a national title in an All Harley Drag Racing Association event.

Druschel took first place in the S & S Super Sport class at the AHDRA Screamin' Eagle Nationals at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina Oct. 12-14.

In the first round of qualifying, Druschel finished with a time of 10.31 which gave him the top spot in the quarterfinals. He then won his quarterfinal and semifinal races.

Druschel then beat Edward Golson of Pine, Colo., in the final. His time was 10.16 at a speed of 115.55 miles per hour.

FOOTBALL: Bowsher High School graduate Adam Nowowiejski led a high school team in South Dakota to an undefeated regular season and berth in the state playoffs this fall.

Nowowiejski is the head football coach at Belle Fourche High School. His Broncs were 9-0 after an opening-round playoff win on Oct. 28 in South Dakota's Class 11A.

But on Nov. 4, Belle Fourche missed a 34-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the game and lost to St. Thomas More 16-14 in a regional championship.

Nowowiejski led Belle Fourche to a title in the Black Hills Conference. His team beat the four-time defending league champs, St. Thomas More, 37-3, in the regular season.

Nowowiejski helped quarterback Alex Kling become one of the best all-around players in the region.

DRAG RACING: Whitehouse resident A.J. Kosanka took first place at an International Hot Rod Association national event in Martin, Mich.

Kosanka, a 2004 Anthony Wayne High School graduate, was crowned champion of the IHRA Division 5 Bracket Nationals at the U.S. 131 Dragway on Sept. 20. Kosanka took first place in Top Class.

Kosanka, who has been competing in drag racing since age 9, consistently runs at 175 miles per hour down a quarter-mile track. His times this season have been around 7.6 seconds.

Kosanka, who is a student at Kettering University in Flint, Mich., will graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering next month.

NORTHWOOD BALL REGISTRATION: Boys and girls ages 5 to 14 who would like to play T-ball, baseball, or softball in 2009 can register from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Josie Reinhart Community Center.

Sunday is the final day for registration. The fee is $30 with a maximum of $45 for two or more participants. Umpires and coaches can also sign up during registration.

LAKE BASKETBALL REGISTRATION: The Lake High School basketball program is forming a sixth-grade girls basketball league at the high school.

Games will be played on Sunday afternoons starting in December. The cost is $200 per team. The first eight teams to register will be accepted.
