Fassett Middle School went Hog Wild for Kyle last week. The school on Starr Avenue in Oregon had a fund-raiser for Kyle Cannon, the former Fassett student who suffered a paralyzing neck injury over Thanksgiving weekend while playing hockey for Clay High School. The 14-year-old was hurt when he was sent head-first into the boards in a tournament outside Dayton.
Liz Felaris, a sixth-grade teacher at Fassett who helped organize the fund-raiser, said that more than $1,000 that was raised would help Kyle s family defray medical and rehabilitation expenses.
The week-long effort included a Coins for Kyle collection in which children dropped coins into their teacher s jar. The teachers competed to get the most coins so they could participate in a pie-eating contest. The idea was to find a piece of bubble gum buried in a whipped cream pie without using any hands. There also was a bake sale.
On hat and slipper days, children were allowed to wear these pieces of clothing if they made a donation. Children also were allowed to get out of study hall and buy a mug of cocoa for 50 cents that they could drink in the library as they read. More than 440 mugs of cocoa were sold.
