Supporters of the Pemberville Opera House rallied enough votes to finish third in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's "This Place Matters" community challenge.

Historic sites across the country solicited votes online to qualify for a $25,000 grant to use for anything except demolition.

Opera House officials said they would have put the money toward an elevator for the 1890s building.

The Paramount Theatre in Austin got the most votes with 14 percent, followed by the Tinker's Cottage in Rockford, Ill. with 11 percent, and the opera house with 6 percent.
