The boy who last year first headed up a drive for denim to be turned into insulation in areas affected by natural disasters collected 4,154 items this year, enough to insulate more than eight houses.

Jerusalem Elementary fifth grader Erek Hansen, who was behind collecting 1,684 denim items last year after reading about the effort in National Geographic Kids magazine, is working with Cotton Inc., an organization that recycles denim into insulation. Erek and his mother, Amy Hansen, coordinated drives and drop-off boxes to collect denim this year.

First Solar Inc. of Perrysburg Township again paid to ship denim items that were collected. Employees also collected 411 pairs of jeans, the largest business contribution.
