Floating-dock extensions at Rossford Marina to aid boaters

Rossford hopes to increase use of its floating docks on the Maumee River by installing finger extensions so boaters can enter their crafts from the side.

The $16,000 project at Rossford Marina is under way, and work is being done by the city's public works department.

In past seasons, boaters had to enter their boats from the rear, which is not as convenient as it will be with the extensions, said Ed Ciecka, Rossford administrator.

"We're hoping that will increase accessibility for boats and increase use of the marina," Mr. Ciecka said.

"It's easier to get in and out."

Rossford Marina was about 65 percent occupied last year, he said.

The marina also has wall dock spaces that are occupied by larger boats, and many of those customers return year after year, he said.

A floating dock space will continue to cost $365 a year.

The extensions will eliminate about 16 floating dock spaces, so there will be about 230 slips, Mr. Ciecka said.

Slip widths also are being expanded from 10 feet to 12 feet as part of the project, he said.

"We're hoping the improvement will prove to be very popular," he said.

City employees started working on the project in recent weeks.

Work is expected to continue this week, he said.

Rossford Marina is located at Veterans Memorial Park, and it typically is open for launching and docking watercraft from mid April through October.
