Owens offers law-enforcement training program

People interested in a law- enforcement career can apply for the Owens Community College's Basic Peace Officer Academy Training Program until the Nov. 11 deadline.

The program runs from January through July and teaches how to conduct criminal investigations, use police equipment, and understand constitutional law.

Local police officers, sheriff's deputies, corrections officers, and others in the field will give instruction to the students.

Participants will get a certification by completing the program, and their coursework will also count toward an associate's degree in law enforcement, according to a news release from the college.

The 29-credit hour program -- held Monday through Friday from either 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 5 to 10 p.m. -- will cost $4,028, school spokesman Bradley Meyer said.

To be eligible for the program, people must be at least 21, pass a physical conditioning test, and have no previous felony, drug, or domestic violence convictions. For more information, contact 1-800-GO-OWENS, ext. 7439.
