Oregon City Council Monday recognized a fifth-grader at Starr Elementary School for his judgment in notifying an adult when he found a loaded gun while playing.

Instead of picking up the .22 revolver, Elijah Meade, 11, told the adult, who summoned police. In doing so, he realized potential danger and took the proper action, police Chief Mike Navarre and Mayor Mike Seferian said at the council meeting. They presented the boy with a letter of recognition.

The incident occurred Sept. 4 while Elijah was playing in a field behind a building in the 2300 block of Starr Avenue. Chief Navarre said it had not been determined if the firearm was used in a crime.
