Dow crosses 12,000 for 1st time since '08

NEW YORK — U.S. stocks gained Wednesday with the Dow Jones industrial average touching 12,000 for the first time since mid-2008.

The major indexes retreated a bit before the Dow ended up 8.25 points to close at 11,985.44. It had climbed to an intraday high of 12,020.5. It was the first time the Dow passed 12,000 intraday since June 20, 2008, several months before the financial crisis peaked. The last time the Dow closed above 12,000 was June 19, 2008.
